So I have a new hero.
The thing about hero's is that they're usually so unassuming, and you get knocked off your feet by the changes they make, and they just want to make a difference.
So imagine my surprise when I'm net-jonesing this morning on my day off, I take a peek on http://www.mylifetime.com/ to check out the new show in their stable 'How To Look Good Naked'. It's hosted by Carson Kressley (The sassy fashion homo from 'Queer Eye'), and is unbelievably impowering. And no, I don't mean in that faux Spice Girl way, more in a tough love 'your being so unkind to yourself and it needs to stop' kind of way. Imagine being a super curvy girl and have him strip you down to your undies on a national TV show, and has you go through yourself head to toe with what you like/dislike about your body. It's not about making over (well, there is an element, but it's not the primary focus), it's about how we percieve ourselves and how others percieve us.
The show is peppered with facts and figures that only reaffirm how unkind we treat ourselves and set ourselfs up for these unrealistic goals, towards these freak of nature that are supermodels! Not to mention, fair comparison to other ladies..It's a gentle wake-up call that all this self-loathing only makes the problem worse.
To top it all off, Carson is neither patronizing, nor creates an image that neither the audience or girl could possibly replicate without the help of paid professionals. He's in stores we can afford, and reminds us that our loving ourselves shines 10 fold to have everyone else lov eis too!
By the end of this show, this girl was all about body love, right down to asking strangers on the street if her 3 storey billboard of herself looked good naked.
This show isn't about glorifying or encouraging being overweight, but more about teaching that change can only come before self-resepct and being kind to number 1. Getting this country out of obesity and weight is most certainly an issue. But this country, especially its females (myself included!) has to learn how to love themselves before it can cleary see how we need to make an impact.
Mr. Carson Kressley...you've DEFINITELY made my christmas card list.
